Name: Manoj Kumar Acharya
Age: 36 years
He was diagnosed with dyslipidemia but averted the need for heart surgery by losing 10.2 kg in 3 months.
In February 2015, Bangalore-based software engineer Manoj Kumar Acharya was admitted into a hospital with a cough, swelling in the joints and fever. The doctors found another fatal complication—a blood clot in his heart. They considered surgery but finally ruled it out.
Manoj was discharged after a 10-day stay at the hospital but a cough and swelling returned once he was back. Doctors in Bangalore advised him to consult specialists in Manipal. He was diagnosed with dyslipidemia, an abnormal amount of lipids in the blood, and asked to lose weight to be better able to manage his life and disease.
Dyslipidemia is a medical condition characterised by high LDL (bad cholesterol) and triglycerides (fat) in the blood. It leads to the build-up of plaque in the arteries and ends up significantly increasing one’s chances of heart attack or stroke.
Doctors usually suggest lifestyle changes, especially more exercise, weight loss and switching over to a healthy diet.
On December 13, 2015, Manoj began his journey with HealthifyMe. He was put under the care of fitness coach Nayan Dhekial and dietician Aruna Shanmughan who, keeping Manoj’s condition in mind, devised a diet and fitness plan that helped him lose 10.2 kg in three just months.
From 80 kg in December 2015, Manoj went down to 69.8 kg in April 2016.
“I began by prescribing exercises to boost metabolism like cardio and strength training,” Nayan says.
Later, Manoj graduated to cardio acceleration—a 40-minute long workout characterised by the absence of any break in between.
This was not the first time Manoj had tried losing weight. Five years ago, he had enrolled in a gym for four months but it had shown no results.
“There was no proper coach and the workout was random,” he says. “It was only after joining HealthifyMe that I realised the importance of teaming exercise with a proper diet plan.”
Manoj has now completely changed his lifestyle and is enjoying every moment of it. He wakes up at 5.30 am and begins yoga and jogging by 6. Breakfast at 8 is comprises dalia, stuffed roti or cornflakes.
He follows this up with a snack at 10.30 am, usually sprouts or fruits and buttermilk. Lunch at 12.30 pm is three stuffed roti (the stuffing can be carrot, beetroot or spinach) or rice, lots of vegetables, and a bowl of dal. This is followed by a 15-minute walk.
After work – almost 5.30 pm – he heads to the gym and trains for about an hour. When he reaches home at about 7.30 pm he eats a plate of salad, which is followed by dinner at 8.30 pm – stuffed roti, mixed vegetables, and milk.
In three months, all of Manoj’s health problems have disappeared. He also looks fitter than ever before.
“His abdomen is flat and there is not much fat to lose. The aim now is to give him some lean muscle and make him look not like a bodybuilder, but more like an athlete,” Nayan says.
Manoj is also pleased with the results and has recommended HealthifyMe to his 21-year-old nephew who is overweight.
“He weighs 79 kg. He is studying for his JEE now. He has said he will join in another three-four months,” Manoj says.
