Prosecco: A Sparkling Wine with Surprising Benefits- Healthifyme

Nothing beats opening a bottle of wine or champagne and raising a glass during celebrations. Prosecco is undoubtedly one of the most popular varieties of wine around the world and may even outsell champagne. But how much do you know about prosecco? Let us see!

Prosecco is a sparkling wine from Northeast Italy that has grown in popularity around the world. Better bubbles and less residual sugar have resulted from improved production techniques. This change means that Prosecco can now more easily showcase terroir and style on your tongue.

This wine’s dominant flavours are apple, honeysuckle, peach, melon, and pear, creating an exciting flavour profile for those who enjoy rich fruit hints. The main ingredient in Prosecco is Glera, a fruity white grape. It frequently includes Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes, which are used in Champagne. This means that while all three have some similarities, each has its own distinct flavour profile.

Prosecco, like any white wine, is made by crushing grapes, fermenting them into alcohol, and maturing the resulting liquid. However, in order to give it its famous carbonation, a few extra steps must be taken.

The Tank or Charmat Method is used by producers. It involves fermentation of the wine with yeast and sugar in large pressurized tanks for up to 6 months before filtering out impurities. This method gives wines an elegant and delicate taste and consistency throughout the entire production process, from beginning to end.

Types of Prosecco

Italian sparkling wine known as Prosecco has gained a lot of popularity recently. It is comparable to the Spanish Cava and the French Champagne in Italy. Although, they have their own variation like the following.

Frizzante:

Wines that are semi-sparkling, such as Frizzante Prosecco, have fewer bubbles in comparison to others. This is done to make it easier to drink without spilling any liquid, the cork and string method, which is an Italian tradition, is used to seal the bottles.

Frizzante is created by interrupting the fermentation process before it becomes fully sparkling, which results in less carbon dioxide being released.

Spumante:

The Sparkling variety is the standard for the denomination and has a lovely, long-lasting perlage. It can be: Depending on the amount of wine’s residual sugar:

  • Brut: When there is less than 12 g/l of residual sugar.
  • Extra Day: When the sugar content ranges between 12 and 17 g/l.
  • Dry: When the sugar level is between 17 and 32 g/l.
  • Demi-Sec: When the sugar content fluctuates between 32 and 50 g/l.

Tranquillo:

It is still a wine that skips the process of preserving carbon dioxide during fermentation, reducing all the bubbles which have a light and less lingering perlage.

Nutritional Value of Prosecco

Prosecco is rich in antioxidants and has multiple health benefits. A glass of prosecco (3.5 fl oz/ 147g) has 121 calories. The nutritional value of one glass of prosecco is:

  • Total Fat – 0g
  • Cholesterol – 0 mg
  • Sodium – 7.4 mg
  • Potassium – 104 mg
  • Total Carbohydrates – 3.8 g
  • Sugars – 1.4 g

Benefits of Prosecco

While excessive alcohol consumption is never good for you, controlled consumption of Prosecco has some surprising health advantages, we’ve listed a few of them down below!

Help to decrease your blood pressure.

We knew Prosecco had a special place in our hearts, but we had no idea Prosecco was doing wonders while it was in your heart. Prosecco contains polyphenols, which are plant chemicals loaded with antioxidant properties.

These polyphenols assist in lowering blood pressure and improving circulation, which lowers your risk of stroke and strengthens the health of your heart.

Furthermore, polyphenols in prosecco slow nitric oxide removal from our blood, giving it more time to act on blood vessels and thus improving blood flow.

This increased blood flow lowers blood pressure as well as the likelihood of clot formation, making you less likely to suffer from cardiovascular disease or stroke.

Contains Mood boosters

We’ve always been perplexed by mood elevations while drinking prosecco, right? Yes, the answer for that is the natural trace elements zinc, magnesium, and potassium present in this sparkling wine have shown to be potent mood enhancers.

Useful to your lung tissues

According to research, Prosecco is beneficial to our respiratory systems. Prosecco, like other types of white wine, is thought to keep lung tissues healthy.

In addition, the antioxidants in white wines like Prosecco can prevent the formation of harmful molecules known as free radicals, which can cause havoc in lung tissue.

May aid with memory loss

Prosecco turns out to be beneficial for cognitive processes. As per a study, one or two glasses of prosecco per week may be enough to prevent the memory loss that comes with getting older.

Useful to your skin.

Are you aware of the antioxidants in prosecco that we keep mentioning? Yes, they are a miracle once again! Your skin is cleansed, evened out, and plumped, which is especially advantageous for those with oily skin or those who frequently break out with the help of those antioxidants.

Prevents Cancer

Similar to red wine, Prosecco has flavonoids that act as antioxidants and lower the risk of cancer. Actually, do you know what? There may be more antioxidants in white wines like prosecco than in red wines, which is better for you.

Your risk of developing diabetes may be reduced.

A 2009 Canadian study found that all wines, including sparkling wines like Prosecco, can reduce your risk of developing diabetes by 13%.

However, they do warn that people with diabetes should exercise and have a low-carb diet while drinking alcohol. In addition, glucagon (a treatment for low blood glucose) will not work if alcohol is present in their system.
