Regular cardio helped Hyderabad-based software engineer Shweta Mikkili maintain her weight while she was college. But she lost her way after she joined an IT firm in 2011. The 7.30 am to 9 pm commute-cum-work schedule left little scope for exercise; the many pressing deadlines kept her glued to her office chair.
Within two years, she went from 69 kg to 75 kg and her waist went up to 39 inches. “One day, I saw my photograph and was shocked by how fat I was looking,” says the 26-year-old.
Shweta started exercising and began losing weight but hit a plateau at 69 kg. But she was determined to reach her ideal size. After seeing knock off kilos with HealthifyMe, she signed up for the programme.
A hardcore “rice-atarian” like most South Indians, Shweta could not imagine a meal without a plate of steaming hot rice.
But that’s the first food HealthifyMe’s Transformation and Rehabilitation Coach Roshini Gilbert struck off Shweta’s diet chart. Lunch comprised a bowl of salad with rajma or chana, dinner was a simple roti-sabzi affair. She was allowed to “treat” herself to rice – the brown kind – only on Sundays.
Shweta learnt not just what to eat, but also when and how much. A cup of toned milk within 20 minutes of waking and a boiled egg white immediately after her morning cardio was a must. She could continue having her favourite idli-sambar-peanut chutney breakfast as long as she cut down her portion size to two instead of the usual four. The breakfast timing was also changed; she had it earlier in the morning.
Shweta was already exercising on most evenings before joining HealthifyMe. Roshini emphasised on adding a morning cardio session to help accelerate her weight loss. Shweta started waking up by 6 am to work out; she began with 20 to 30 minutes of aerobics at home by following a fitness DVD.
On Roshini’s advice, she also took regular “screen breaks” and ditched her office elevator to increase her overall activity level.
Shweta admits there were many “tough” days when she was tempted to go back to bed instead of heading for exercise.
“But Roshini did not let me slip,” she says.
Apart from being in touch on a one-on-one basis, Roshini created a Whatsapp group of about 100 of her HealthifyMe clients. The group is for weekly challenges – for instance, having two cups of green tea daily instead of regular chai – and a three-month transformation contest. All group members post their “before” and “after” pictures and vote for the one who has changed (for the better) the most.
Shweta won the challenge in September.
“I was thrilled,” she says, adding that she got an evening gown, sponsored by one of the group members, as a prize.
But Shweta got her biggest reward when she saw her parents’ blood glucose reports recently.
“My mother and father are diabetic. Since they started eating the healthy meals I am consuming, their sugar levels have reduced considerably,” she says.
She also enjoys seeing the surprise on faces of friends who meet her after long. A former colleague did not recognise her in a photograph posted on Facebook.
“I had to convince him that I was the same Shweta he used to sit next to in office,” she says.

This app is awesome. I have lost 7.5 kgs in 3 months. The calorie counter does its job really well. It has almost all indian foods listed. So that is a plus point. I make it a point to enter my calorie intake regularly which has definitely helped me to keep it within limits
Plus 45 mins – 60 mins of dvd workout daily has helped me lose weight plus the inches. I feel awesome when i fit into my old clothes. But there is still a long way to go. I am at 81. I started at 88.8 on May 15th. Post delivery weight is difficult to lose but I am sure I will get there. I have not signed up for personal nutritionist on HealthifyMe.
