Rinse the yellow split lentils in a colander and set aside.
Heat oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add cumin and mustard seeds and let them sizzle for a few seconds.
Add the ginger-garlic paste and sauté for a minute.
Add the chopped onion and sauté until it turns golden brown.
Add the chopped tomatoes, turmeric powder, red chili powder, coriander powder, garam masala, and salt. Sauté for a few minutes until the tomatoes are cooked.
Add the yellow split lentils and 4 cups of water. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to low and simmer for 20 minutes or until the lentils are cooked.
Add the chopped green chilies, lemon juice, and cilantro. Stir to combine.
Serve the yellow dal with steamed rice or roti. Enjoy!
