Soak the Urad and Chana Dal in water for at least 2 hours.
Heat oil in a pressure cooker. Add cumin seeds and let them crackle.
Add the asafoetida and chopped onion and sauté until golden brown.
Add the ginger-garlic paste and sauté for a few minutes.
Add the chopped tomatoes and sauté until they are soft.
Add the coriander powder, turmeric powder, red chilli powder, garam masala, amchur powder and salt. Mix well.
Add the soaked Urad Chana Dal and mix well.
Add 2 cups of water and close the lid of the pressure cooker.
Cook for 3-4 whistles or until the dal is cooked.
Garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot with chapatis or rice.
