Heat the oil in a pan over medium heat.
Add the mustard seeds, cumin seeds, urad dal, chana dal, split black gram, split Bengal gram, and asafoetida. Fry for a few seconds.
Add the green chillies, onion, curry leaves, peanuts, cashew nuts, raisins, and grated coconut. Fry for a few minutes.
Add the semolina and fry for a few minutes.
Add the water and salt to taste.
Cook for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the semolina is cooked and the upma is thick.
Serve hot.
