Soak the urad dal in water for at least 2 hours.
Drain the water and grind the urad dal into a coarse paste.
Add the salt, cumin seeds, black pepper, asafoetida, green chillies and coriander leaves to the paste and mix well.
Heat oil in a deep pan.
Take a small portion of the paste and shape it into a round disc.
Carefully drop the disc into the hot oil and deep fry until golden brown.
Remove the vadai from the oil and drain on a paper towel.
Serve hot with chutney or sambar.
