Wash and soak the tuvar dal in water for 30 minutes.
Heat oil in a pressure cooker. Add cumin seeds and mustard seeds and let them crackle.
Add ginger-garlic paste and sauté for a few seconds.
Add onion and sauté till it turns golden brown.
Add tomatoes, green chillies, turmeric powder, red chilli powder, coriander powder, garam masala, sugar and salt. Sauté for a few minutes.
Add the soaked tuvar dal and 2 cups of water.
Pressure cook for 3-4 whistles.
Once the pressure is released, open the lid and mash the dal with a spoon.
Garnish with chopped coriander leaves and serve hot with steamed rice or roti.
