Wash and soak the toor dal in water for about 30 minutes.
Heat oil in a pan and add the cumin and mustard seeds.
When the seeds start to splutter, add the chopped tomatoes and green chillies.
Saute for a few minutes until the tomatoes are soft.
Add the soaked toor dal, turmeric powder and salt.
Add 2 cups of water and bring to a boil.
Reduce the heat and simmer for about 15 minutes or until the dal is cooked.
Serve hot with steamed rice.
