Tomato Bath is a popular South Indian breakfast or lunch dish that is both nutritious and flavorful. It is essentially a tomato based rice dish spiced with various ingredients and is similar to tomato rice. It's a one pot meal, quick to prepare and makes for a perfect lunchbox recipe. Tomato Bath is often served with raita or papadum and its spicy tangy flavor is loved by all.

1 cup

tomatoes pureed


onion, finely chopped


green chilies, slit


ginger garlic paste

1 teaspoon

mustard seeds

1/2 teaspoon

cumin seeds

1/2 teaspoon

Few curry leaves

turmeric powder

1/2 teaspoon

red chili powder

1 teaspoon

Salt to taste


2 tablespoons



Step 1:

Cook rice and set aside.

Step 2:

Heat oil in a pan, add mustard seeds, cumin seeds and curry leaves. Once they splutter, add chopped onions, green chili and ginger garlic paste. Saute until onions turn golden.

Step 3:

Add tomato puree, turmeric powder, red chili powder and salt to taste. Cook until the oil separates from the sides.

Step 4:

Add cooked rice to the pan and mix well. Cook for a couple of minutes.

Step 5:

Serve the Tomato Bath hot with raita or papadum.
