Soak the toor dal in water for 30 minutes.
Heat oil in a pressure cooker and add mustard seeds and cumin seeds.
When the seeds start to splutter, add the chopped onion and green chillies.
Saute for a few minutes until the onion turns golden brown.
Add the chopped tomatoes and saute for a few minutes.
Add the turmeric powder, red chilli powder, coriander powder and garam masala.
Add the soaked toor dal and mix well.
Add 2 cups of water and salt to taste.
Pressure cook for 3-4 whistles.
Once the pressure is released, open the lid and add the tamarind paste.
Simmer for 5-10 minutes until the sambar thickens.
Garnish with chopped coriander leaves and serve hot with steamed rice.
