Ingredients

red lentils

1 cup

water

3 cups

salt

1 teaspoon

turmeric powder

1/2 teaspoon

red chilli powder

1/2 teaspoon

vegetable oil

1 tablespoon

cumin seeds

1 teaspoon

garlic, minced

2 cloves

small onion, finely chopped

1

chopped tomatoes

1/2 cup

garam masala

1 teaspoon

Directions

Step 1:

Rinse the lentils until the water runs clear.

Step 2:

In a pot, bring the water to a boil. Add the lentils, salt, turmeric, and chilli powder.

Step 3:

Reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and let it simmer for 20 minutes.

Step 4:

In a pan, heat the oil. Add the cumin seeds, garlic, and onion. Cook until the onion is golden.

Step 5:

Add the tomatoes and cook until they're soft.

Step 6:

Pour the onion-tomato mixture into the lentils. Add the garam masala and stir well.

Step 7:

Let it simmer for another 10 minutes.

Step 8:

Serve the red dal hot with rice or flatbreads.
