Red Dal or Masoor Dal is a lentil dish from India, often made into a soup-like consistency. Rinse the lentils until the water runs clear.
In a pot, bring the water to a boil. Add the lentils, salt, turmeric, and chilli powder.
Reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and let it simmer for 20 minutes.
In a pan, heat the oil. Add the cumin seeds, garlic, and onion. Cook until the onion is golden.
Add the tomatoes and cook until they're soft.
Pour the onion-tomato mixture into the lentils. Add the garam masala and stir well.
Let it simmer for another 10 minutes.
Serve the red dal hot with rice or flatbreads.
