Soak the split green gram in water for about an hour.
Heat oil in a pan and add the mustard seeds and cumin seeds.
When the seeds start to splutter, add the chopped onions and sauté until they turn golden brown.
Add the chopped tomatoes and sauté for a few minutes.
Add the turmeric powder, red chilli powder, coriander powder, garam masala and asafoetida and mix well.
Add the soaked split green gram and mix well.
Add enough water to cover the dal and bring it to a boil.
Simmer the flame and cook until the dal is cooked and soft.
Add salt to taste and mix well.
Serve hot with steamed rice or roti.
