Soak the rice and urad dal in separate bowls for at least 4 hours.
Grind the soaked rice and urad dal separately into a fine paste.
Mix the two pastes together and add enough water to make a thick batter.Let it ferment overnight.
Add the chopped onions, green chillies and salt to the batter and mix well.
Heat a non-stick pan and pour a ladleful of the batter onto it.
Spread the batter evenly and drizzle some oil around the edges.
Cook the dosa on medium heat until it turns golden brown.
Flip the dosa and cook the other side until it is golden brown.
Serve the onion dosa hot with chutney or sambar.
