Wash and soak the moong dal and masoor dal in water for about 30 minutes.
Heat oil in a pressure cooker. Add mustard seeds and asafoetida.
When the mustard seeds start to splutter, add the cumin seeds and green chillies.
Add the chopped onion and sauté till it turns golden brown.
Add the ginger-garlic paste and sauté for a few seconds.
Add the chopped tomatoes and sauté till they become soft.
Add the turmeric powder, red chilli powder, garam masala, coriander powder and amchur powder.
Add the soaked dals and mix well.
Add 2 cups of water and salt to taste.
Close the lid of the pressure cooker and cook for 3-4 whistles.
Once the pressure is released, open the lid and check if the dal is cooked properly.
Garnish with chopped coriander leaves and serve hot with steamed rice or roti.
