Wash and soak the masur dal in water for 15 minutes.
Heat oil in a pressure cooker. Add cumin seeds, mustard seeds and let them splutter.
Add the chopped onion and sauté till it turns golden brown.
Add the ginger-garlic paste and sauté for a minute.
Add the chopped tomatoes and sauté for 2 minutes.
Add the turmeric powder, red chilli powder, coriander powder and garam masala and sauté for a minute.
Add the soaked masur dal and 2 cups of water.
Add salt to taste and mix well.
Close the lid of the pressure cooker and cook for 3-4 whistles.
Once the pressure is released, open the lid and mash the dal lightly.
Garnish with chopped coriander leaves and serve hot with steamed rice or roti.
