Soak the chana dal in water for 30 minutes.
Heat the oil in a pan and add the cumin seeds.
When the cumin seeds start to crackle, add the chopped onions and green chillies.
Fry until the onions are golden brown.
Add the grated lauki and fry for a few minutes.
Add the soaked chana dal, coriander powder, garam masala, red chilli powder, turmeric powder and salt.
Mix well and add 2 cups of water.
Cover and cook on low heat for 15-20 minutes or until the dal is cooked.
Garnish with chopped coriander leaves and serve hot.
