2 cups

ripe tomatoes


green chillies



2 tablespoons

mustard seeds

1 teaspoon

chana dal

1 teaspoon

urad dal

1 teaspoon

curry leaves


turmeric powder

1/2 teaspoon

Salt to taste



Step 1:

Rinse the rice until the water runs clear, drain it and keep it aside.

Step 2:

Chop the tomatoes finely.

Step 3:

Heat oil in a pan add mustard seeds, chana dal, urad dal and let them splutter.

Step 4:

Add chopped green chillies and curry leaves.

Step 5:

Now, add chopped tomatoes, turmeric powder, and salt. Cook until the tomatoes are mushy.

Step 6:

Add rice and mix well, so that the rice is coated with the tomato mixture, and cook for 15 minutes. Cover the pan and let it simmer for 10 minutes or until the rice is fully cooked.

Step 7:

Tomato rice is ready. Serve hot with raita or plain curd.
