Soak the chana dal in water for at least 30 minutes.
Peel and grate the ghiya.
Heat oil in a pan and add cumin seeds.
When the cumin seeds start to crackle, add the grated ghiya and sauté for a few minutes.
Add the soaked chana dal, turmeric powder, red chilli powder, garam masala, coriander powder, amchur powder and salt to taste.
Mix everything together and add 1 cup of water.
Cover and cook on low heat for 15-20 minutes or until the dal is cooked and the ghiya is soft.
Serve hot with chapatis or rice.
