Soak the chana dal in enough water for at least 2 hours.
Drain the water and transfer the dal to a pressure cooker.
Add turmeric powder, red chilli powder, coriander powder, cumin powder, garam masala, amchur powder, asafoetida, ginger-garlic paste and salt to taste.
Add 2 cups of water and pressure cook for 3-4 whistles.
Heat oil in a pan and add cumin seeds.
When the seeds start to crackle, add the chopped onion and sauté till it turns golden brown.
Add the chopped tomato and sauté for a few minutes.
Add the cooked dal and mix well.
Simmer for 5-7 minutes or till the dal reaches the desired consistency.
Garnish with chopped coriander leaves and serve hot with chapatis or steamed rice.
