Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease and flour a 9 inch round cake pan.
In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla. Combine the flour, baking powder and salt; stir into the creamed mixture alternately with the milk. Fold in the chocolate chips and walnuts. Spread evenly into the prepared pan.
Bake for 30 to 35 minutes in the preheated oven, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean. Cool for 10 minutes before inverting onto a wire rack to cool completely.
In a medium bowl, beat the whipping cream until stiff peaks form. Beat in the confectioners' sugar until stiff.
To assemble the cake, place one layer of the cake on a serving plate. Spread with half of the cherry pie filling. Top with the second layer of cake, and spread with the remaining cherry pie filling. Spread the whipped cream over the top and sides of the cake. Refrigerate until serving. Enjoy!
