Ingredients

black chickpeas (kala chana)

2 cups

oil

2 tablespoons

cumin seeds

1 teaspoon

mustard seeds

1 teaspoon

bay leaves

turmeric powder

red chilli powder

1 teaspoon

coriander powder

1 teaspoon

garam masala

1 teaspoon

medium onions, finely chopped

tomatoes, finely chopped

green chillies, finely chopped

ginger-garlic paste

2 tablespoons

chopped coriander leaves

2 tablespoons

Salt to taste

Directions

Step 1:

Soak the black chickpeas overnight in enough water.

Step 2:

Drain the water and pressure cook the chickpeas with enough water and salt for 3-4 whistles.

Step 3:

Heat oil in a pan. Add cumin seeds, mustard seeds, bay leaves, cloves and cardamom pods.

Step 4:

When the seeds start to crackle, add the chopped onions and sauté till they turn golden brown.

Step 5:

Add the ginger-garlic paste and sauté for a minute.

Step 6:

Add the chopped tomatoes, turmeric powder, red chilli powder, coriander powder and garam masala.

Step 7:

Sauté for a few minutes till the tomatoes turn soft.

Step 8:

Add the cooked chickpeas and mix well.

Step 9:

Add enough water to make a thick gravy.

Step 10:

Simmer the curry for 10-15 minutes.

Step 11:

Add the chopped green chillies and coriander leaves.

Step 12:

Serve hot with chapatis or steamed rice.
