Soak the beans overnight in a large bowl of cold water.
Drain and rinse the beans.
In a large pot, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the onion and garlic and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
Add the cumin, chili powder, smoked paprika, oregano, salt, and pepper and cook for 1 minute.
Add the beans, vegetable broth, and diced tomatoes. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to low and simmer for 1 hour, stirring occasionally.
Add the cilantro and cook for an additional 15 minutes.
