“I started running because I wanted to lose weight and be fit. Now I want to lose weight and be fit because I want to run.”

Here’s why and how-my story of transformation.

I always liked running. But there was never an intent to my running. It was always a “Thing” I did every now and then. However, things changed somehow when I started running during COVID. First time I started running with an intent. First time, I was running seriously, with a specific plan to improve my performance. With my Garmin watch I started learning the nuances of running. Two years ago, I reached my milestone, I was truly proud of: I ran 20 half marathons in a single year.

Obviously during this time, I lost a lot of weight because of the running. It was amazing to see the kilograms melt away as I increased my mileage. Naturally, it felt great when people around me noticed and complimented me on the transformation.

But then, I hit a plateau, both in running and weight loss. No matter how hard I trained or how far I ran, my progress stalled. My times stopped improving, and the scale refused to budge.

My next big thing was daunting, my first full marathon. While I could complete a 21 KM very easily, I was struggling to cross the 30K mark on several attempts. I decided to do whatever it took to complete my first full marathon. I achieved that in January 2024. It was not the best performance, but I was proud of it nevertheless the less. But that full marathon came at cost. I had gained back almost 4 Kgs as I was not watching my diet-in fact, I was eating too much.

During my training leading upto 42KM, I realised that there are no shortcuts to becoming a full marathoner. Even the genetically blessed people have to focus on training, diet, weight etc if you want to improve your performance 42KM, leave aside an average person such as myself.

For the next four months, I focused intensely on my diet and nutrition. I tracked my micronutrients meticulously, ensuring I got the right balance of proteins, fats, and carbohydrates to support my training without overindulging. Slowly but surely, I lost a total of 8 kilograms. The weight came off steadily. Today I am the lowest on the scale, ever since I tracked my weight. But there is still more work to be don as continue onto my next goal.

Lost 11 kg · in 36 months · Age 45
