  • Then exhale through pursed lips. In this step, the hand on the chest should rise while the hand under the rib cage should fall.
  • Repeat the exercise a few times.

Coherent Breathing

Coherent breathing, also known as Resonant Breathing, is a slow breathing technique that involves six breaths per minute. This pattern of slowing down the breathing rate will alter the autonomic nervous system, including blood glucose and heart rate. Studies show that this will change the brain’s activity, decrease stress, and maintain insulin secretion.

  • Sit in a relaxed position and place the flat on the floor. Or lay down comfortably, slowly enhancing to the end of your breathing ability.
  • Now inhale the air steadily through the nose, corresponding with the count of six, all the way in until the full capacity level of the lungs.
  • Then exhale the air through the nose until the lungs are empty for another count of six.
  • Repeat the breathing techniques a few times.

Buteyko Breathing

Buteyko Breathing is one of the most advanced breathing techniques that can significantly benefit the management of optimal blood sugar levels. Below are the steps to practice the Buteyko method,

  • Start breathing through your nose.
  • Slow breathing, keep it gentle and quiet and avoid deep inhalations.
  • Slow the breathing flow consistently until you experience a slight shortage of air.
  • Maintain the light breaths, and continue this for one minute, solely focusing on the attention on the breathing pattern.

Alternate Nose Breathing

Research has reported that people with increased blood sugar levels increase the chances of nerve damage due to the inactivity of blood vessels. Alternate Nose Breathing is also known as Anulom Vilom. It is one of the deep breathing techniques that improve the circulation of oxygenated blood in the head of diabetic people, promoting neuronal activities.

Follow the steps to try alternate nose breathing at home.

  • Find a comfortable position to sit and exhale the air through the nostrils.
  • Take the right thumb to close the right nostril and inhale through the left nostril.
  • When you reach the top of the inhale, release the right nostril whilst closing the left nostril with the left forefinger.
  • Now exhale through the right nostril.
  • Inhale through the right nostril, switch back to closing the right one, and exhale through the left.
  • Repeat the steps for at least 5 minutes until you feel relaxed.

According to the survey, there is a rise in the incidences and complications of having high blood sugar. However, experts said the condition could be managed effectively by following a few steps and preventive measures.

  • Cut down the food sources rich in refined carbohydrates and sugar in the diet.

  • Make sure to keep an eye on your blood sugar levels regularly
  • Perform physical activity, yoga, or meditation daily
  • Quit smoking and enhance the consumption of vitamin D to prevent a spike in your blood glucose.
